Entrepreneurship ruined my life.
Recently I read the Google Document Why are entrepreneurs so miserable? (archive) by Andrew Ryder.
And in the document, he says this:
I was once a happy kid, full of optimism and joy.
But my desire for success hardened into a constant anxiety of never doing enough and never being good enough in the online business game. I could see the stress and aging in the lines on my face.
I wasn’t the same person as before. And I wasn’t the person that I wanted to be.
Entrepreneurship ruined my life.
To be honest, I cannot stress how true this is to me, even though I'm just a young teenager.
I have sacrificed everything I have: My family, my friends, and even my health. Just to chase the mystical prize that is "success".
Yet it feels like I am not any closer to achieving my dreams.
In the TV series Peaky Blinders
, Tommy Shelby—the gang leader turned businessman turned politician—is having a conversation with Winston Churchill. They are trying to figure out how they’re going to defeat their opposition in the coming elections.
And between these points, Shelby notes something interesting:
“I have three gardeners. Men who have no ambition, and yet are all happier than I’ll ever be.”
If you have read the original Google Document, you may have realized that I stole a lot of parts from the document to this post. Mostly because I agreed with them and they are so good not to include them.
