Normally, moving involves packing your goods and transporting them to a new location. However, one guy in San Francisco gave the phrase a whole new definition when he physically relocated his entire house, porch and all, seven blocks away.
The two-story Victorian structure known as Englander House was lifted onto large dollies and moved to its new home on Fulton Street after 139 years at 807 Franklin Street.
The transfer was orchestrated by owner Tim Brown, a San Francisco real estate dealer, in order to preserve the historic structure while developing the original property into a 48-unit apartment building. Brown bought Englander House for $2.6 million in 2013, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
He spent up to $400,000 transferring it down the street, where he intends to turn it into seven residential apartments. The minty green Victorian mansion, built in 1882, has a total area of 5,170 square feet. From 807 Franklin Street to 635 Fulton Street around the corner, it was moved at an average pace of 1 mile per hour for 0.06 mile.
More than 600 people gathered to witness the home make its gradual trek downtown, which began at 6.15 a.m. Although there was a street parade ambiance, the excursion was hardly a stroll in the park. To make room for the structure, street lights, parking meters, and electric lines had to be removed, and the owner had to get nearly 15 separate permissions.
San Francisco has a lengthy history of home relocations, with horses pulling them along the street until vehicles and trucks took over.
The first time Englander House has been transported in over 50 years. Videos and photos from the event quickly became popular, as expected. Many individuals used the comments area to make jokes about the strange occurrence.
One guy joked, “Did they simply consider using balloons?” next to a photo from the movie up. “It doesn’t look so good here. Move it back!” another person said.
“The Victorian ghost lady is so confused I bet,” a third said.
