The Willbros Group is a 100-year-old energy infrastructure construction firm with a very modern IT problem. As it sought to leverage the public cloud and mobility to streamline efficiencies and increase competitiveness, the firm was faced with a whole new set of security and management challenges to overcome. The answer was Trend Micro Deep Security – Trend Micro’s flagship server security platform designed to protect data and systems across physical, virtual and cloud environments. Taking advantage of Trend Micro’s unique purchasing flexibility, Willbros is leveraging a cloud-based service version of Deep Security, helping them to quickly get up, running, and secure.
Cloud transformation
Many of Willbros Group’s 7,000 IT users were still of the belief a few years back that “you don’t need a computer to build a pipeline.” But customers had other expectations and increasingly demanded the firm invest in new technologies to better manage asset lifecycle and business risk. Apart from that, pipelines today are regularly acquired and divested, leading to difficulties and inconsistencies around hand-written, long-term record keeping.
The firm looked to the public cloud – Amazon Web Services (AWS) – to power its Integra Link pipeline mapping service built on Google Maps, which now has over 4,000 users. Later it added in a tablet-based field capture element to improve record keeping. The pipeline giant was looking to expand its public cloud investments even further but faced resistance from a board keen to ensure hosted data was as secure from targeted attacks as data stored in-house.
Built for the cloud
Willbros Group’s VP of information systems, Jason Cradit, needed a security solution designed specifically with the cloud in mind, to keep these external workloads safe from harm. But he was also looking for a delivery model which handed over the responsibility for set-up, maintenance, admin and updates to the security provider.
“We don’t want to build data centers. We also don’t want to manage a lot of the transactional security related stuff. We want experts to manage that for us,” says Cradit.
The answer was Trend Micro Deep Security as a Service – which provides all the market-leading protection capabilities of Deep Security without the work of setup and ongoing maintenance, allowing firms like Willbros to focus on securely growing the business.
“One of the problems of cloud is … there’s an amazing amount of sprawl. What Deep Security has done for us is be able to detect that sprawl, see it and make sure we’re protecting it,” says Cradit.
“So it gave us the ability through one pane of glass; here’s our security posture, here’s what we’re looking at. And not only do I have to go to the pane of glass – it lets me know ahead of time.”
Thanks to Deep Security, Willbros Group has been able to truly leverage the power of the public cloud – cutting its data center footprint, rolling out transformative new services, and planning a new IoT rollout – with the confidence that its workloads are completely safe and secure.

Good article! As far as I understood this scenario could be applied to both small and big business. The difference is that new start-up will use cloud from the beginning unlike a big business that will need to move to the best data rooms in order to be up-to-date.
